If you did not make it to New Years Eve in Rio de Janeiro this past year, it is never too early to start planing your trip for next year. After Carnaval, New Years Eve to Brazilians is the next biggest celebration, attracting people from all over the world to be a part of the biggest party on the planet. Over two million people fill the Copacabana beach area every year for this highly celebrated occasion.
The party starts around 8pm where you will find stages of live music that have been preparing for your welcoming all day. The fireworks, which are the biggest light display in the world, begin at midnight with the turning of the year. In addition to the millions of spectators on the beaches, giant cruise ships fill the water for an even different view of this spectacular display.
In 2008 a new attraction found itself added to the party; a giant Ferris Wheel. The Ferris Wheel was installed at Forte de Copacabana, that displayed digital effect and images of Rio de Janeiro.
New Years Eve 2010 was s celebration of all time this past year. Brazil had been confirmed to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2014 World Cup, causing hotels to be booked up even earlier than usual. Although it poured rain the day before, Mother Nature, as always, smiled on Rio de Janeiro with plenty of heat and sunshine for the celebrations.
If you are coming to the party you should know that it is a tradition to wear white, it is considered a lucky color. You can add colored accessories such as red or green, but black is never an appropriate color for this event. Many people bring flowers to throw into the sea at midnight as an offering to Yemanja who is the deity of the seas. Be sure to bring a bottle of champagne to pop at midnight and be prepared to wear more than you drink. Everyone shakes their bottles to spray, another sign of good luck.
Plan your New years Eve trip to Rio de Janeiro as far ahead as you can as it is anticipated to book even earlier than last year. This is not the kind of place you are likely to find a last minute flight to. Come be a part of the biggest celebration in the world, an event you will never forget!
